David – Three Lives Three Destinies

A fresh wave of excitement came over me when I saw the trailers of ‘David’ in the movie halls… my son introduced me to ‘Maria Pitashe’… a friend made me hear ‘Duma Dum Mast Kalandar’… and I was hooked – a beautiful Sarika as I saw her singing was a great feeling and my one time favourite Remo Fernandes buzzing the guitar.

I so waited to see the movie.

After several plans got cancelled we finally made it to the theatre but for the first 20 minutes I could not make out what’s happening as the movie rolled fast, revolving around the lives of three different persons – all named David.

But then it kind of gripped on. Oh it had a few good surprises.

The movie is about three men Vikram, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Vinay Virmani who have the same name ‘David’ but are born for different reasons, in different time zones at different places – in Goa, London and Mumbai. “Despite their world being so different, despite being in different age groups, their conflicts come together. The attempt is only that,” director Bejoy Nambiar told gcaffe.

What I liked was the 1975 part of the story filmed in London and in black and white… unusual crime thriller depiction that made an impact. Neil Nitin Mukesh as the gangster was in full form. I almost whistled as he came on the screen. The other two Davids were new boys on screen and they had a lot of presence.

A complex story which takes you through a journey into three lives fighting for three causes is superlative and not seen in recent times. The music has made an impact as I get to hear it everywhere. The background score gets full marks. A fresh song ‘Yun Hi Re’ is a delight to hear and see too. Sarika was a refreshing surprise along with Saurabh Shukla who punched in the humour.

We do see little bit of Satish Kaushik in a small role and Lara Dutta. Both seemed to have put on weight and aged a bit. Tabu is amazing in the role of Frenny, a massage parlour owner in Goa and the best of all was Prahlad Kakkar who debuts in Bollywood.

I heard they say the end was messed up… but I think Bijoy Nambiar did a great job as intertwining three stories together successfully is not an easy job. The message he gives is that in every wrong there is a right and God has made you strong enough to deal with what comes your way as you are no ordinary man – You Are David.
