There was a time in India when women were not allowed to act on the stage, so men used to dress up as women and do the theatre acts. Now men do it by their own desire or as and when the script requires. What is it with all these men and why do they play such roles? One, they are muscular and have six packs and then they dress up and wanna become delicate as women! Gosh – from Dara Singh to Shammi Kapoor to Amitabh Bachchan – we have seen all in female roles.
Now let’s see the news makers this month – Guthi, Palak and Dadi in Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colors television channel. All three characters are men who play the role of women and are extremely loud in every sense but are loved by audience.
In Comedy Nights with Kapil, we have Ali Asgar as Dadi, Sunil Grover as Guthi and Kiku Sharda as Palak. All three totally enjoy their performances. Kiku Sharda will also be seen with his wife in Nach Baliye 6 on Colors. Guthi is reportedly leaving the show and would be seen in one of his own. I hope Sunil Grover plays more of himself than Guthi as that is where his true talent lies. And Kapil also gets to show his comedy skills after Guthi quits.
The latest, we will see Ravi Kishen playing a woman in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s upcoming movie Bullet Raja and Mahesh Manjrekar playing eunuch in Rajjo.
Don’t we have enough women in Bollywood that such muscular men are playing these roles of women in movies?
