A mushy weekend with some adventure ahead for all. The films we see this Friday on India Box Office – Dawaat e Ishq, Khoobsurat, A Walk Among The Tombstones, Dolphin Tale 2 and The Maze Runner.
DAAWAT-E-ISHQ (Hindi): Genre: Comedy/Drama | Director: Habib Faisal | Cast: Aditya Roy Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra, Anupam Kher and Karan Wahi
A film that will make you hungry as the base of Daawat-e-Ishq is food. Directed by Habib Faisal, Daawat-e-Ishq is the story of two lovers from two different cultures which revloves around food.
Recently we saw the release of ‘Two States’ which also had the turbulence of meeting of two cultures, directed by Abhishek Verman, with Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor as the lead pair. This is not the first time in Bollywood that this theme has been used.
One such experiment that comes to mind is 1981 film ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’ which was directed by K.Balachander and had Kamal Hassan and Rati Agnihotri as the lead pair. ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’ was a super duper hit on the box office then. One major difference in Dawat-e-Ishq is that both the boy and girl are Muslims and maybe that makes it a little easier for them.
‘Daawat-e-Ishq’ has Anupam Kher who is the father of Parineeti Chopra who plays ‘Gulrez’ who is from Hyderabad and is looking for prospective bride grooms who can cook well. All they can find are dowry hunters and nothing else. Then Gulrez meets Tariq a fabulous cook from Lucknow and the love story begins. Parineeti Chopra and Anupam Kher had to learn ‘Dakhni’ which is similar to Urdu as it is Hyderabad’s native language.
Music of Daawat-e-Ishq which is composed by Sajid-Wajid is creating waves since released. ‘Kala gora har rang mora, karta hai tujh se dua… Meri mannat tu’ is sung by Sonu Nigam who is back after a long time in mainstream singing along with Shreya Ghoshal. A bubbly number ‘Shayrana’ by Shalmali Kholgade and the title song which goes like … dil ne dastarkhan sajaya… are foot tapping numbers.
Daawat-e-Ishq is award winning director Habib Faisal’s third film, other two being ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ and ‘Ishqzaade’. He won a National award for Best Hindi Feature film for ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ which was released in 2010. The film is produced by Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films.
KHOOBSURAT (Hindi): Genre: Comedy/Drama | Director: Shashanka Ghosh | Cast: Fawad Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah, Kirron Kher, Aamir Raza Hussain and Ashok Banthia
Disney brings a love story, directed by writer and popular ad-film director Shashanka Ghosh which is set in beautiful locales of Rajasthan.
It is said that ‘Khoobsurat’ is loosely based on Rekha starrer 1980 film, by the same name and has a strong resemblance to Anne Hathaway & Julie Andrews 2001 film ‘Princess Diaries’. In both these films a simple girl who is clumsy and loud creates havoc in a household where discipline is the main ingredient.
This time the story is in a royal family which has Ratna Pathak, known for her stern looks and role in popular 2005 TV show ‘Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai playing Rani Sa who controls the whole palace. The King (played by Aamir Raza Khan) is confined to a wheel chair and a physiotherapist is called for his treatment.
Sonam Kapoor is Dr. Mili Chakravarty, who is a loud Punjabi girl full of life and a lot of drama. Kirron Kher plays her over dramatic mother. The Pakistani actor Fawad Khan known for his Pakistani serials, debuts in ‘Khoobsurat’ and plays Prince Vikram Singh Rathore who falls for Dr. Mili and then the love story evolves.
‘Engine Ki Sitti’ , ‘Naina’ and ‘Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai’ has the rapper Badshah and Sona Mahapatra singing in Khoobsurat. Jasleen Kaur Royal has sung a soft number called ‘Preet Na Kariyo Koi’ and the lyrics are penned by Amitabh Verma. This song has a couplet by ‘Meera Bai’ … Jo main aisa jaanti ke preet kare dukh hoye, nagar dhindhora peetti ke preet na kariyo koi… which has been used many a times in Bollywood in many songs earlier. In 1952 Lata Mangeshker sang these verses in Baiju Bawra. The music is composed by Sneha Khanwalkar.
Khoobsurat is produced by Anil Kapoor, Rhea Kapoor and Siddharth Roy Kapoor who have joined hands with Walt Disney Pictures.
We also have three English releases: A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES, directed by Scott Frank, the cast includes Liam Neeson and Dan Stevens. The film is based on a novel by Lawrence Block. It is a crime thriller where a drug dealer hires a private investigator to investigate the murder of his wife.
THE MAZE RUNNER, directed by Wes Ball, the main cast includes Dylan O’Brien and Aml Ameen.
The story of a young boy who loses his memory and finds himself in a dingy elevator called The Box. It is a city of walls they are unable to cross. He enters the maze and so the adventure begins.
We also have the sequel of ‘Dolphin Tale’ out this week. Directed by Charles Martin Smith ‘DOLPHIN TALE 2′ has Harry Connick Jr, Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd in as cast. Based on true events this is the story of two Dolphins, Winter and Hope. They are unable to swim back to the ocean so they are kept at this hospital for recovery. An amazing tale of human and animal bonding ‘Dolphin Tale 2’ is a family drama film.
This is all for this week … till next week ciao!
